Im grateful that I live in this country, in this time
period. I am a recent recipient of one the miracles of medical science, a
second total hip replacement. After all our travels, I know that living in
another country or living 100 years ago, I would have been the little old
grandma they carried out to the rocking chair. As a result of these hip
replacements, I will be walking and working again.
I am also grateful for the art concepts we have absorbed
from other cultures and other time periods. The pendant in the above picture
is called a Tuareg Cross. We saw the Tuaregs riding camels on the border of
Morocco and Algeria. They are called the blue men of the desert because of
the blue turbans they wear. The dye in the turbans is crushed into the fabric
without water life in a desert. As a result the dye comes off easily and
these gorgeous tall men have a bluish cast to their skin. The pendants are now
worn by women but originally were passed down from father to son. As stated
in the book AFRICA ADORNED The father would say My son, I give you the
four corners of the world because one cannot know where one will die.
Now we can be a part of that history. We can wear the pendant and somehow
feel closer to the other cultures of the world. When we can take from the
richness of other cultures and add it to ours-we are the richer.
